ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WXYZ) — Tuesday was for paczki, but the rest of the month is for hamantaschen. It's a Jewish pastry made for the holiday Purim and this year, it's going to a good cause.

The idea first started just days ago at a Jewish bakery in Berlin, Germany. From there, it spread online and now dozens of bakeries in at least six countries have signed on, including Sister Pie in Detroit and Tuscan Cafe in downtown Northville.

“Clicked on it, found out more and decided right away we wanted to be part of it,” said Jayme Hundley, owner of Tuscan Cafe.

Hundley says she found out about the campaign on Instagram. In just two days of selling hamantaschen, they’ve already surpassed their usual yearly sales of the pastry.

“I think we’re all feeling helpless and interested in helping, and this is just one small effort that we’re making,” Hundley said. “(It's) a way for our customers also to feel like they’re helping in some way too.”

Mar 1:

Hamentachen for Ukraine! 🇺🇦

We have single Hamentachen or order ahead by the dozen.

Beginning today, Tuesday March 1st, we will be donating all proceeds from the sale of all flavors of our @zingermansbakehouse hamantaschen.

Order here:
https://tuscan-caf-copy.square.site/

We will have single or by the dozen available of Hamantaschen. $1 per cookie is going to support the relief of Ukrainian refugees at the border of Poland through @hamantashen_for_ukraine.

This small act during a time when overwhelmed in feelings of helplessness reminds us that humanitarianism comes in whatever form you’re able to contribute.

Hamantaschen are wonderfully scrumptious triangle-shaped, open faced cookie dough pastries usually eaten during the late-winter Jewish celebration of Purim. We load the simple real butter and organic flour dough with an assortment of traditional fillings: vanilla bean cream cheese, poppy seed, and apricot and prune walnut (our unexpected favorite!)

OUR STORY

The Tuscan Cafe is located in the heart of Downtown Northville. We opened our doors in 1995 and began our quest to serve the community with superb coffee. We quickly added sandwiches, salads, soups, desserts, pastry, and everything else that belongs in a Cafe and Deli.

Next year will be our 25th anniversary in business here in Northville and we have created a vision of what the next years will have in store for us at the Tuscan Cafe. While we will continue to strive for excellence and high quality, we will also take on the challenge of eliminating single use plastic in our facility. You may see a little more glass bottles, a lot more dishes, and hopefully a better experience knowing this small cafe is changing the world one cup of coffee at a time. Thank you for supporting us and our mission to make Northville and the world a better place!
