Our Story

M.M.LAFLEUR IS A FEMALE-FOUNDED STARTUP BUILT ON A CORE BELIEF:
When women succeed, the world becomes a better place. Our goal is to take the work out of getting dressed, so that you can focus on the work that matters to you.

Living Our Mission

While we know that clothes can’t solve all the world’s problems, we’re committed to using our products and our voices to empower working women in any way we can. Here are a few of the initiatives we’ve been working on lately:

BOTTOMLESS CLOSET

Since 2017, we’ve partnered with an incredible organization called Bottomless Closet, which helps disadvantaged NYC women enter and succeed in the workforce.

READY TO RUN

In early 2020, we offered complimentary clothing loans to women running for office.

GIRL SCOUTS OF THE USA

In fall of 2020, we partnered with Girl Scouts of the USA to help get out the vote, raise membership scholarships, and hold mentorship panels for Girl Scout Cadets.

READY TO VOTE

To encourage our customers to get out the vote, we offered exclusive discounts to anyone who showed that they were registered to vote, phone banking, text banking, or working the polls.

SHE SHOULD RUN

To celebrate International Women’s Day in 2019, we donated 40% of the profits from our Centennial Suit to She Should Run, an organization that empowers and educates women who are considering running for office.

GENDER FAIR CERTIFIED

We are proud to be a Gender Fair-certified company. (Gender Fair is the first consumer rating system for gender equality, which reports on how companies serve women as leaders, employees, customers and citizens).

OUR CUSTOMERS

Maybe you’re breaking barriers in the corporate world and need pieces that make you feel comfortable and confident. Maybe your work is at home with the kids, and you need an easy-to-style wardrobe that’s 100% machine-washable and Twister-friendly. Or maybe you’re running for local office, working to create the change you want to see in your community. We have clothes for you.

OUR TEAM

Our Founder and CEO, Sarah LaFleur, got her start as a management consultant. Frustrated by a lack of women’s workwear options that were both stylish and practical, she teamed up with Miyako Nakamura (the former head designer of Zac Posen) and Narie Foster to launch M.M.LaFleur in 2013. Since then, we’ve grown into a team of go-getters who are committed to creating a better future for women. Miyako serves as our Chief Creative Officer, and her high-end design sensibility is a beautiful complement to Sarah’s focus on practicality.

OUR CLOTHES

When Miyako and her team create a piece of clothing, they make sure it encompasses three things: functional details (think: adjustable hems and bra-strap holders); comfort (and not just comfortable-for-a-blazer comfort—we strive for I-could-nap-in-this comfort); and style—so you can be the most chic, polished person in every room you enter. If you’re new to our brand, start by checking out our best-selling essentials.

Our Commitment to Sustainability

We pride ourselves on designing thoughtful, timeless pieces that are built to last. Here’s what we’ve done so far—and what we’re still working on—to become a more sustainable company.

Produced with care. Built to last. Our clothes are stylish but not trendy, and we pride ourselves on creating designs you’ll want to wear for years to come.

TEXTILE PRODUCTION

We dot our i’s and cross our t’s. By which we mean, we not only know where our fabrics come from, but we also know the families who run and operate the mills that create them.

TEXTILE DESIGN

We spend years developing fabrics that combine a luxurious feel with features like machine-washability and odor-resistance that reduce the garments’ impact once in your closet. We just launched a new fabric, Recycled Wondertex, made from recycled bottles.

TEXTILE RECYCLING

Since 2018, we’ve partnered with FABSCRAP to recycle the bits of material that get left behind throughout the production process. Together, we’ve saved 6,478 lbs of fabric scraps from landfills.

Get down with upcycling.

Our clothes are built to last, but we know your wardrobe will evolve over time. We make it easy to upcycle pieces you no longer need, which reduces a garment’s carbon footprint by 82% on average.

SECOND ACT

Our customer-to-customer resale site, Second Act, where you can buy and sell pre-loved M.M. items.

THREDUP

We include thredUP bags with every order. Use them to upcycle the clothes you no longer wear (including non-M.M. items!).

BOTTOMLESS CLOSET

Since 2017, we’ve donated thousands of pieces of clothing to this incredible organization, which helps disadvantaged NYC women enter the workforce.

Care(ful) packages.

Over the past few years, we’ve made major strides toward more sustainable packaging.

GOOD THINGS IN SMALL PACKAGES

In 2020, we transitioned to flat-pack shipping from our factories to our warehouse, which takes up less transit space and requires fewer cartons. Additionally, we take care to use recycled materials in our packaging when possible: our hangtags are made from 100% recycled paper; the polybags used to ship from our factories are biodegradable; and our bubble mailers are made with 50% recycled materials and take up less transit space than cardboard boxes.

LOGICAL LOGISTICS

We’ve partnered with a zero-landfill logistics center, which stores and ships all our inventory and orders.

SHAPING UP OUR SHIPPING

95% of our inventory is shipped from our factories to our warehouse by boat, rather than by plane. This option is significantly more fuel-efficient, reducing the carbon footprint of each garment.

It’s the climb.

__We know we have more work to do, and we’re so excited to continue along this journey. Here is our pledge for the future:__ We will create the option to offset carbon shipping for customer orders by the end of 2021. We will use 100% sustainable materials by 2030. We will be fully climate-positive by 2040.
