Description
ABOUT
Founded in 2014, Creature Comforts is a purpose-driven, B-Corp certified craft brewery based in Athens, Georgia. Since opening, we’ve expanded into a second Athens production facility and begun construction on a new brewery and taproom in Los Angeles, CA. With a purpose rooted in human connection, we’re committed to giving back to both the local and craft beer communities. Our impact initiatives range from our sustainability efforts, which recently led to TRUE Zero Waste certification, to our impact programs including Get Comfortable and Brew for One, and our industry support through partnerships with the Giving Kitchen an involvement in the Brewers Association.
PURPOSE We exist to foster human connection.
MISSION
We aim to be a force for good in the world through the development of industry-leading beverages and experiences.
GET COMFORTABLE
Since its inception, the mission of Get Comfortable has been to channel the generosity of many toward the greatest local needs. In 2021, we approached our Advisory Council—a consortium of social services professionals—to help us identify a single area of focus to which we would direct our resources and energy over the next 5 years, with the aim of achieving a measurable impact.
Through the guidance of this group, we selected early literacy as the first multi-year impact area, targeting 3rd-grade reading proficiency as our metric of success.
Literacy is more than just an educational issue. The studies—cited above—show that the prevalence of early literacy has either positive or negative long-term effects: contributing to increased employment and economic development on the one hand, or predictive of poverty and incarceration rates on the other.
Therefore, for the next 5 years Get Comfortable is committed to increasing the percentage of Clarke County 3rd-grade students reading at grade level from 20% to 60%.
BREW FOR ONE
Just because you can’t do everything for everyone does not mean, of course, that you should do nothing for no one. What would it look like to do for somebody what you wish you could do for everybody? What would it look like for you, for us, for anyone, to take a step toward a neighbor in need? That is the heartbeat of Brew For One.
This program began in late 2017 with the tragic loss of one our beloved Creatures—Bob Weckback, who was at the time our Head Cellarman. We worked alongside Jesse Ferguson, Bob’s brother-in-law and co-founder of Brooklyn’s Interboro Spirits & Ales, to collaborate on a beer to honor Bob’s legacy of generosity. We eventually released the beer, aptly named Cellarman’s Spirit, and used the profits to seed a college fund for Bob’s son.
Since then, the Brew For One program has worked to identify a new recipient every year and meet some of their most pressing needs. We then brew a beer and put the profits to work.
SUSTAINABLITY
At its heart, the word sustainability means an ability to endure, to last. Companies can endure and last by ensuring good financial health, but we recognize that there are externalities not captured on a financial balance sheet—if a company is actively contributing to climate change in pursuit of profit, that’s not a sustainable company.
We’re on a mission to be at the forefront of sustainability in craft beer and serve as change agents in the industry, examining the negative externalities of our operations and developing strategies to mitigate them. We’ve identified 5 main areas of focus for this work: water, electricity, natural gas, carbon dioxide, and waste.
We are also committed to transparency. We’re always tracking, measuring, and recording our efforts and adjusting our goals. We believe we should be sharing the data and results of this work so that we’re not only embracing sustainable practices, but doing so with authenticity.
