Left Bank books opened in 1969 in the city’s historic Central West End neighborhood. Kris Kleindienst started working there in 1974 and is now the owner! She also created the Left Bank Books Foundation dedicated to “promoting literacy and the literary arts in the St. Louis area by providing books, author events, and related programming to primary and secondary school students, disadvantaged populations, and all St. Louisans“. Their River City Readers program has since distributed over 10,000 books to St. Louis Public School students!

Founder Janice Inducil is a first generation immigrant giving back to her birth country. 50% of her profits support the Australian Foundation for Fostering Learning in the Philippines which helps students in 15 poorly resourced elementary public schools in Talomo District, Davao City, Mindanao!
